Community Garden Plots At Hallockville
Museum Farm
Applications are now available for plots
in the Hallockville Community Garden. This is the programs
second year. It enables community members to re-connect
with their agricultural roots by tending to individual
400 square foot plots.
The community garden is a great resource
for people who live in apartments, townhouses, or who
just want to share their love of gardening in a group
setting.

their agricultural roots. The 28-acre farm preserves eighteen
historic houses, barns and outbuildings ranging from the
mid-18th century Hallock homestead to the Depression-era
Cichanowicz farmhouse. Visitors can tour the museums
buildings, gardens and collections; experience real farming
in the museums fields; and meet Hallockvilles

2008 Woman of the Year Announced

The East End Womens Network has
announced that the 2008 Woman of the Year is Susan Barry
Roden.
Susan Barry Roden, a resident of Water
Mill, NY, is an advocate for breast cancer research and
services in the east end of Long Island. She is the Community
Outreach Coordinator of the Breast Center at the Southampton
Hospital, as well as the Executive Director of the South
Fork Breast Health Coalition.
Fifteen years ago, at the time of Susans
breast cancer diagnosis, there were no support services
for patients and their families. Susan found herself battling
cancer without any services focused on healing the psychological
and emotional aspects of breast cancer. In addition, education
on breast cancer prevention measures was in demand in
a region with one of the highest incidences of breast
cancer in New York State.
Susan promised that once she was healthy
again no other woman from Manorville to Montauk would
ever endure breast cancer alone.
The cost of the upcoming Gala Awards
Dinner is $55. For more info, visit the East
End Womens Network web site.
The East End Womens Network
was founded in 1982 to bring together women of diverse
accomplishment and experience, directing women into policy-making
positions through the dissemination and sharing of career
opportunities; to educate members and the public on issues
affecting women on the East End; and to promote the interests,
conditions and positions of women in science, business,
industry, labor, government, the arts, education and public
service.
Atlantis Exec to Climb Everest for Kids

Atlantis Marine World's COO, Bob Pospischil,
on
Mt. Cho Oyu's 180-foot ice cliff at 22,500 feet.
Atlantis Marine World is sponsoring its
Chief Operations Officer, Bob Pospischil, on his summit
of Mount Everest. The 59-year-old Nesconset resident and
former US Marine Fighter Pilot and Top Gun Instructor
will be gone for nine weeks as he leaves Long Island to
climb Mt. Everest.
I have been interested in climbing
for many years and three years ago, I finally stepped
off the edge and just did it, explains Pospischil.
What makes this climb especially thrilling is that,
through all my research, it appears I am the first Long
Islander to attempt the climb!
In 2005, Pospischil reached the summit
of Mt. Rainer, in Washington state. This was followed
by climbs of Mt. Cayambe (South America), Mt. Cotopaxi
(South America), Mt. Elbrus (Europe), Mt. Aconcagua (South
America), and Mt. Cho Oyu (Himalayas). These experiences,
in addition to a vigorous training schedule, have now
prepared him for the ultimate challenge, the Mt. Everest
expedition.
I believe that my age has nothing
to do with my abilities, Pospischil says. With
this expedition to Mt. Everest, I hope to show people
that no obstacle can keep them from realizing their own
goals.
Pospischil is hoping that his attempt
will also help others. He is working with the Islandia-based
Contractors for Kids non-profit to raise awareness and
money for its mission, which is to assist children and
their families overcome obstacles that have impacted their
lives through sickness, injury, or death.
Starting March 27, people can visit www.rmiguides.com/himalaya/everest-trek.html
and follow Pospischils daily journey in photos as
he summits Mt. Everest.

awarded a grant by the Long Island Fund for Women &
Girls (LIFWG). As one of the Fund's Quality Early Care
and Education Grant recipients, CCE intends to use the

to parents and caregivers in early care and education
centers in Suffolk County, at the Shinnecock Indian Health
Service and the Family Service League.

Fostering Body Confidence (ages 1-5):
Parents want their children to develop a healthy self-body
image and feel comfortable with their bodies. We will
discuss how parents can nurture their child's body confidence
and help protect him/her from the many toxic messages
confronting us daily. (One session)
Fun and Learning: The Importance of
Play: Child's play is more that just play; it is how
children learn and it's essential to their development.
Come to this workshop to learn how play positively affects
children's emotional, physical, social and intellectual
growth. (One session)
Building Strong Families: Life
is stressful and parenting is complicated. Pressures placed
on families don't always lead to lifestyle choices that
are beneficial to a child's healthy development. Join
us to explore how families can take small steps for big
improvements in the areas of meals, play, family relationships
and overall well-being, while living in today's fast-paced
culture. (Two sessions)
Peaceful Meals with Preschoolers:
Many parents are frustrated by picky eaters. We will look
at different stages of child development and the feeding
relationship between the parent and child. Well
discuss childrens nutritional needs, how to meet
these needs, and how to enjoy stress-free mealtimes. Lastly,
well build meal-planning skills, learn to improve
nutrition while appealing to the preschooler, and discover
strategies to cope with picky eaters. Sessions will end
with sample nutritious meals for the preschooler prepared
by the program participants. (Three sessions)

the effort and sign "The Pledge."
