4th Annual Dragonfly Day
Saturday, August 14 1PM (Rain Date: Sunday, August 15)
Skipper Horton Park, 72250 Route 25, Greenport
"What do the Wandering Glider, 12-Spotted Skimmer,
Eastern Amberwing and Blue Dasher have in common? No,
they're not kites or planes or wind-surfers----they're
all Odonates (also known as Dragonflies and Damselflies),
each of which have been recorded as part of a breeding
population at Skipper Horton Wentworth Park in Greenport.
At this event, you will learn about these insects' predatory
feeding habits, breeding behavior, and life cycle from
Dragonfly specialist Annette Oliveira, who will help you
to identify the dragonflies you find that day. We will
give you tips on how to view these superb insects up close,
and you'll leave with your own personal checklist of dragonfly
and damselfly species that you've seen that day, and others
that you may come across on Long Island. We will demonstrate
how to capture dragonflies for identification purposes,
and then release them, unharmed. In addition to observing
these fabulous insects up close, we will be using costumes,
kites, story telling and art activities to understand
these creatures and the special world they live in. Face-painting
and refreshments will be available for sale so please
join us from 1 PM until 4PM.
