Seminar: How to Do An Astronomy Project
Saturday, May 31, 3:00-6:30 PM.
Custer Observatory, Southold
"Participating in science fairs is important for
a number of reasons. Participation can also enhance a

rewards are great so it's important for all involved to
prepare for the competition. This seminar is intended
for teachers and students (and helpful parents). A team
of presenters will cover all aspects of doing an astronomy
project."

Saturday, August 9, 6:00pm (rain or shine)
Palmer Vineyards, Sound Avenue, Aquebogue
"Summer evenings not to be forgotten begin with a
concert surrounded by the picturesque vineyards of the

Long Island-based ensemble brings an honest, heartfelt
message of love, life and laughter to each performance.
The talented brother-sister duo of Dave and Krista March,
with musical journeyman Jonathan Preddice, combine to
bring a unique texture of harmony and song. After adding
young phenom Rob Caniglia on percussion, and the talented
Leanne Preddice on the violin, the ensemble has expanded
its horizons to both acoustic and/or full band performance
setup. Miles to Dayton will leave a lasting impression
on your ears, relying on quality musicianship along with
a melody that will carry you back to the next show. With
the successful release of their first album A Long

Wine Press Concert: Rare Groove Band
Saturday, August 16, 6:00pm (rain or shine)
Pindar Vineyards, Main Road, Peconic
"Summer evenings not to be forgotten begin with a
concert surrounded by the picturesque vineyards of the
East End. Returning to the East End after rave reviews
from the Winterfest, join band members James Miceli (Tenor
Sax), Rod Borrie (trombone), Pete Campo (guitar), John
DeWitt (organ), Jeff Brown (bass) and Kevin Twigg (drums)
for an evening made for dancing and grooving. The
term "Rare Groove" originated in the late 1980s,
referring to a renewed interest in the jazz-funk of the
1970s. Sometimes referred to as soul jazz, it's music
drawn from jazz but steeped in blues, made by a number
of great (although often relatively unknown) musical masters.
It's jazz with an emphasis on the beatthe groovethat
makes people smile and want to get up and dance. This
music sounds fresh today because its blend of organ, horns,
guitar, drums and bass creates an infectious danceability.
After all, this was party music that was played not in
the concert hall, but in neighborhood clubs as its artists
traveled the various circuits in support of their recordings.
Much of this music has historical significance as the
original source that has been sampled and reused by today's
hip hop artists. So, it's rare music not widely heard
today (or even when it first came out), and it grooves,
so it's rare groove."
Tickets: $20 at the East End Arts Council or at the gate;
season pass for the five-concert series available for
$80.
Concertgoers are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets.
Seating is not usually provided. Picnic dinners are welcome,
but no outside alcohol is permitted.

About Our Calendar Listings:
With the exception of our sponsors' events, the NorthForkParents.com
calendar listings are for community organizations offering
events and programs for North Fork families. In general,
we try to list events that are open to the general public
and not limited to exclusive constituencies. We wouldn't
want to disappoint anyone, especially the children! We
would be happy, however, to provide links to organizations'
web sites who offer additional events to its own constituents.
