Idioms: Upcoming East End Arts Council Members Exhibit

This year the theme is Idioms. The EEAC asked members to pick any idiom and depict it literally or otherwise in a work of art. Some members thought that would be a piece of cake; others had to rack their brains until the perfect idiom came to mind. Is the EEAC in over its head?

The public can sidle on over to the opening of Idioms on Friday, January 16 from 5:00 – 7:00pm and give the show the once over to decide. Art enthusiasts can feast their eyes on the idiomatic art; laughing their heads off at some entries or perhaps running into others they can’t make heads or tails of. Maybe they’ll come to rub elbows and chew the fat with other East End art lovers—in any case, we do hope they’ll drop in. Maybe they’ll find a painting, photo, poem or sculpture and fall head over heels.

The public is also invited to put its two cents in by casting a vote for Best in Show (opening night and for the first 2 weeks the show is up). The EEAC’s lips will be sealed until February 3rd when it announces the artist with the lion’s share of votes.  The EEAC expects the winner to be bowled over when it forks over a check for $50 and a free entry pass for each juried EEAC show in 2009. The show will hang around through February 20th. For more information, give the EEAC a jingle at 727-0900.

Amazing Scottish Fiddle Concert Presented by Oysterponds

Scottish Fiddle Concert at Oysterponds

On Saturday, January 10, 2009, the Oysterponds Historical Society will present in concert the famous Scottish fiddler, Alasdair Fraser, together with cellist Natalie Haas, in a unique North Fork appearance of these outstanding musicians. Nothing is more likely to brighten the January doldrums than the foot-stamping, dance-in-the-aisles excitement of Scottish fiddling in full fly, and the program will include some of the most haunting traditional music preserved by Robert Burns. This will be a concert to remember.

The concert will be at Poquatuck Hall on Village Lane in Orient, and will begin at 7:00 P.M.; doors will open at 6:30. Tickets will be $25, or $22 for members of OHS. Seating is severely limited; to reserve your place, send a check, with your name, address and telephone number, to OHS at P.O. Box 70, Orient, New York 11957. For information, please call 631-323-2480.

“ … you would think they’d been playing together for centuries. While his fi ddle dances, her cello throbs darkly or plucks puckishly. Th en [Haas] opens her cello’s throat, joining Fraser in soaring sustains, windswept refrains, and sudden, jazzy explosions. Their sound is as urbane as a Manhattan midnight, and as wild as a Clakmannan [Scotland] winter.” ~ Boston Globe

“Fraser, one of the most respected of all exponents of the Scots fiddle, would look long and hard to fi nd a more appropriate cellist as a partner. Haas can switch just as eff ortlessly as Fraser from a gentle singing tone to driving, dancing melody. A positive joy.” ~ The Scotsman

Rockin’ for the Homeless

Rockin for Maureen's Haven at Polish Hall 2009

On Saturday, January 24, 2009, three Long Island powerhouse bands, The Mulligans, Misspent Youth and Who Are Those Guys will rock the house to raise money for Maureen’s Haven, the network of organizations providing temporary shelter to eastern Suffolk’s homeless.

The event will take place at Polish Hall at 218 Marcy Avenue in Riverhead. The doors open at 6:30. Tickets are $20 in advance and may be purchased at East Enders Coffee House, Love Lane Kitchen, or the Fat Cat Paperie at 426 Main Street Center Moriches. The ticket price at the door is $25.00. Tickets may be sold out.

Admission price includes light fare treats (hot dogs, hamburgers, kielbasa, all with fries) put out by the Polish Hall kitchen and a chance for a door prize. There will also be a 50/50 raffle and a Chinese Auction featuring dozens of outstanding prizes from various businesses on the East End.

The bands will play covers of high-energy danceable hits from the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s of the most memorable tunes by the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Billy Joel, Led Zeppelin, The Police, Rod Stewart, Oasis, Lynyrd Skynyrd , U2,  Neil Young, Credence Clearwater Revival  … and many more.

News 12 Long Island anchorwoman Danielle Campbell, who has worked with the Lighthouse Mission which has been dedicated to feeding the poor on Long Island since January 1992, will act as Master of Ceremonies.  Also appearing will be Miss Long Island 2009, Wendy Jean-Bart. Ms. Jean-Bart, who began volunteering with the homeless at age 15, is a third year law student at Touro Law Center and is the managing editor of the International Law Review.  As a volunteer over the last 10 years she has worked at various soup kitchens and has had the opportunity to do pro bono legal work for the homeless.

The whole evening will focus on raising money and public awareness for Maureen’s Haven Homeless Outreach, a not-for-profit organization operating under the auspices of Peconic Community Council, Inc.

According to event chairman Tom Gahan, “We wanted to make this an inspiring evening.   The committee of volunteers has done an outstanding job. I have been working with some of these people on events for 10 years so I know what I can expect. Their participation, along with 3 great bands, is a guarantee that the ‘Rockin’ for the Homeless’ benefit evening will be met with thunderous applause.”

Caren Heacock, Maureen’s Haven coordinator at the Mattituck Presbyterian Church stated, “In its 7th season, Maureen’s Haven meets the needs of homeless people on the East End by opening the doors of various houses of worship, 7 nights a week from November 1 through April 1, providing a safe place to sleep, a home cooked meal, including breakfast and lunch, and friendship and help with services.  Hundreds of people volunteer with this life-saving outreach.  Your participation in this benefit event allows Maureen’s Haven to continue caring for those with the most dire needs.  We are grateful to the musicians, the countless people working behind the scenes, and to you, the audience, for making a difference where it matters most; to the many lives saved through Maureen’s Haven.  Thank you.”

Bay Street Hosts First Annual Holiday Concert & Sing-Along

On Monday, December 22, 2008 at 7:00pm, Bay Street will open its doors for the entire community to join in the First Annual Holiday Concert & Sing-A-Long–an evening of holiday songs, featuring Irish Tenor Ciaran Sheehan and pianist Brenda Landrum. Part Sing-along, part Broadway encores intermingled, the evening promises to be a fun night that entire families can enjoy together.

Mr. Sheehan is a renowned Broadway performer who just this past week appeared on “From Galway to Broadway” on PBS. Ms. Landrum is known across New York for her tinkling of the ivories, most notably locally at the American Hotel.

In this season of giving, the management at Bay Street decided that it would be fun to offer up a free evening of entertainment that entire families could enjoy together. Fortunately Edward Burke, Jr., Bruce Davis, and the American Hotel generously stepped up to underwrite the evening. While there will be no cost for admission, the theatre is asking for guests to bring a non-perishable item for the Sag Harbor Food Pantry. Said Managing Director Gary Hygom, “While all non-profit organizations are struggling, we felt it was important to still give back to others as best we can. If we can provide a fun evening out away from the news and simultaneously donate to some neighbors in need, why not?

No tickets will be required and the Bay Street bar will be open at 6:00pm. Come enjoy some holiday cheer and a song with your friends and neighbors. The Bay Street Holiday Concert & Sing-A-Long promises to be a great annual tradition for years to come.

Check out the full schedule at www.baystreet.org or visit us on the Long Wharf, Sag Harbor. Box office is currently open Tues-Sun 11am-6pm.

Bay Street Theatre is a not-for-profit institution, dedicated to presenting new, classic and contemporary works of the highest quality, which challenge as well as entertain, speak to the diversity of the community and champion the human spirit.

North Fork Dad Publishes 2009 Fishing Calendar

Tom Schlichter

Do you like to fish or do you know someone who likes to fish? Fishing is a great way to tap into the North Fork’s rich maritime heritage while snagging some dinner.

Southold father of three and Newsday columnist “Outdoor Tom” Schlichter has published Long Island’s Best Fishing 2009 Calendar, which is full to the gills with tips and information that no fisherperson in his right mind would share with a living soul. Except that’s what he does.

And he has offered to give a copy away to one NorthForkParents reader.

When does codfishing reach its peak? Where can you catch big stripers on June’s full moon? What color bucktails work best for August fluke? Are the trout stocked yet?

Based on over 40 years of experience, input from local angling experts, plus data mined while writing his Newsday column, “Outdoor Tom” Schlichter has compiled a wealth of local knowledge. Here he sprinkles it across the seasons in a format as helpful as it is easy to understand. This 9” x 12” high-quality glossy calendar offers lots of pretty pictures, too.

From Brooklyn and City Island to Montauk and Orient Points, follow the action and stay on the fish. Detailed information is provided for both freshwater and saltwater species, boat, surf and ice-fishing, plus bait, lures and flies. Species covered include fluke, striped bass, bluefish, weakfish, false albacore, codfish, blackfish, winter flounder, porgies, sea bass, snappers, blue crabs, trout, largemouth bass, pickerel, walleye, white perch and more.

The calendar costs $17.95 and is available at local tackle shops and bookstores, and on the web at www.OutdoorTom.com. Copies can also be ordered by mail at: Outdoor Tom Corporation, P.O. Box 462, Southold, NY 11971 (include $3.50 for tax, postage and handling).

And Tom Schlichter has generously offered to give away a copy to one lucky reader of this blog, The New Crop! Send an email to info@NorthForkParents.com by January 5 for a chance to win your very own copy–or give it away to the fisherperson in your life. The NorthForkParents publisher’s children will randomly and fairly select one winner on January 5.
