Spring Break Program at Hallockville Museum Farm

Hallockville Museum Farm, 6038 Sound Avenue, Riverhead, will offer a Spring Break program for kids called “Springtime on the Farm” on Monday, April 21 through Friday, April 25, from 12:00noon – 4:00pm.

The program is “a chance for children ages 6 to 12 to experience hands-on projects and lessons such as spinning wool into yarn from our own sheep, making weathervanes and windsocks, starting a compost pile, planting trees for Arbor Day, and dying with natural inks. Learn about old fashioned chores and farm life by doing laundry on a washboard, cooking in a wood burning stove, churning butter, and caring for animals. Traditional farm culture and history comes alive in an educational and engaging manner!”

Upcoming Parenting Workshops from Cornell Cooperative Extension

“Parenting is a demanding job! Parents need reliable information, skill training and support in raising children to be responsible and productive adults. As part of Family and Consumer Sciences of Cornell Cooperative Extension, Suffolk County, the Human Development Program is committed to helping parents:

· Gain understanding of child development
· Increase confidence in their roles as parents

The Family Table
“Our busy schedules have driven many families away from the everyday family table. But now more than ever we need the benefits of gathering together to bond as a family. Learn how to make your family connection, nutrition, and well being a priority once again. In this workshop you’ll learn about the benefits of family mealtimes, tips for getting the family together and prepare a simple nutritious meal for your family.”

Coping With Toilet Learning

CAST Sponsors Wellness Series

Community Action in Southold Town (CAST) has announced a series of informal presentations by area health professionals covering various topics to include: anger management in the family; women’s and men’s health screenings; personal performance coaching; nutrition; and more.

The series will begin Tuesday, April 8, 6:00pm-8:00pm at the Greenport Recreation Center (located between First and Main Street next to the Opportunity Shop).

Music & Art Lessons for Parents?

Did you ever tell someone, “I used to play piano,” or flute, or cello, maybe the trumpet, saxophone or violin? Or maybe you used to sing? Have you always enjoyed art and wanted to do more? Some of us have always wanted to learn, but never had the opportunity as a child.

In addition to the children enrolled in group and private music & art classes, the Community School of the Arts in Riverhead has lots of adult students, from beginner to advanced. Music and art instruction isn’t just for kids! Currently there are daytime openings for voice, guitar, piano and violin during the week and openings on all woodwind instruments, cello, percussion and piano on Saturdays. Two Family Astronomy Events Added to Calendar

Annual Family Astronomy Day
Saturday, April 12, noon until dusk
Custer Observatory, 1115 Main Bayview Road (South of Rte. 25), Southold
“Astronomy and space related events and crafts for all ages. Rain or shine. Planetarium and dome theater performances will include ‘Sky Quest,’ the story of a young girl who grows up to become an astronomer, and ‘Dawn of the Space Age,’ an engaging multimedia retrospective which takes the audience from Sputnik to the International Space Station. Weather permitting: solar observing and guided tours of the night sky from dusk until midnight.”
Refreshments available.
Suggested donation: $5 Children (13 and under), $10 adults, $20 family (2 adults and children)

2nd International Sidewalk Astronomy Night & Film
Saturday, April 12, dusk until midnight (film at 10:00pm)
Custer Observatory, 1115 Main Bayview Road (South of Rte. 25), Southold
“Join Custer Observatory staff members as they hit the streets of Southold with their telescopes and give passers-by a glimpse of the wonders of the night sky. At 10PM, come to the observatory and view the documentary “A Sidewalk Astronomer” (about the life and work of John Dobson, who many consider to be the Father of Amateur Astronomy). The film will be followed by guided tours of the night sky through Custer’s telescopes.”
Refreshments.
Suggested donation: $5 Members; $8 Non-Members. $3 Children under 14
