“Parenting is a demanding job! Parents need reliable information, skill training and support in raising children to be responsible and productive adults. As part of Family and Consumer Sciences of Cornell Cooperative Extension, Suffolk County, the Human Development Program is committed to helping parents:
· Gain understanding of child development
· Increase confidence in their roles as parents
· Improve communication skills with their children
· Decrease feelings of isolation
· Enhance parent-child interaction
The following are parenting workshops coming up at Cornell’s offices in Riverhead this spring:

April 8
The Family Table
“Our busy schedules have driven many families away from the everyday family table. But now more than ever we need the benefits of gathering together to bond as a family. Learn how to make your family connection, nutrition, and well being a priority once again. In this workshop you’ll learn about the benefits of family mealtimes, tips for getting the family together and prepare a simple nutritious meal for your family.”

Coping With Toilet Learning
“Is your child physically and emotionally ready for toilet learning? Are you? This workshop will discuss signs of readiness and offer guidelines to successful toilet learning.”

Raising Responsible Children
“We all want our children to grow into being responsible, contributing members of our families and, ultimately, of society. How do we guide our children to acquire the necessary skills and motivation? This workshop for parents of 5 to 12-year-olds will explore parenting practices that teach children responsibility for themselves, for their schoolwork, for their home, and for their relationships.”

Building Strong Families
“Life is stressful and parenting is complicated. Pressures placed on families don’t always lead to lifestyle choices that are beneficial to a child’s healthy development. Join us to explore how families can take small steps for big improvements in the areas of meals, play, family relationships and overall well-being, while living in today’s fast-paced culture. ”

Raising Healthy Children in an Overweight World
“This workshop has been developed for parents of children ages 2-12 who have concerns about their weight. We will discuss causes and consequences of childhood obesity as well as what families can do to encourage healthy habits and promote a healthy lifestyle.”

Winning Ways to Talk With Kids
“My kid won’t listen” is a familiar refrain among parents. The ability to communicate effectively with your children will help you at every stage of their development. Learn how to avoid communication breakdowns and be a better listener.”
