EEAC To Offer Winter Break Art Classes

The East End Arts Council is offering a series of art classes for children during the upcoming winter break from school, February 16- 19.  Those who want to try out a new art form, get messy, or imagine themselves being a famous artist like Monet will find they’re in good company in these fun classes that meet in two sessions – either 10-11 a.m. for children 4-6 years old or 11:30- 1 p.m. for children 7+ years. The cost for each class is $10 for EEAC Members/$12 others. Take one, or register for all of them. A special Poetry class is free!

Winter Break Classes include:

Be A Portrait Painter – February 16
Study examples of famous portraits through the ages and paint a portrait of the best subject of all, yourself!

Be a Modern Master – February 17
Experiment with diverse painting techniques to create your own abstract masterpiece.

Be a Muddy Sculptor – February 18
Mold and shape your own clay animal or imaginary crazy creature sculpture.

Be a Puppet Maker – February 19
Make your own pop-up puppet with glue, cloth, yarn and a variety of recycled materials.

Be A Poet (FREE) -  February 18
Poets paint with words, you can too! Explore the visual aspects of poetry with local poet Julie Sheehan.

East End Arts Council Announces Spring Classes

A new lineup of art, theatre and music classes at the East End Arts Council School of the Arts has been announced. The Winter/Spring 2010 class brochure is available with a comprehensive selection for adults and children, including many classes in watercolor painting, acrylic and oil painting as well as drawing, plus interesting spring seasonal offerings that focus on the garden and outdoors. New classes for adults include rughooking, paper making, mask-making, and plein-air painting. For kids, digital photography, Anime/Manga cartooning and mixed media art tap into popular art forms children may not have a chance to explore on their own or in school. An extensive list of music offerings includes Suzuki group violin, group guitar, Chamber Ensemble, NYSSMA Prep workshops, Music Composition and more. And, in the performing arts, theatre for kids continues with two new classes.

“The School of the Arts at the East End Arts Council has a distinguished roster of faculty members who are professional artists and musicians with proven teaching abilities,” said Art School Director Maggie Kritsberg. Classes deliver quality, in-depth art and music experiences in a friendly setting. The school offers small class sizes, professional instructors, and over 30 years of expertise in producing arts, theatre and music programs for the local community.

Pumpkin Carving Workshop at School of the Arts

“Just in time for Halloween, George Adams will share his passion for pumpkins in a hands-on workshop, where carvers of all ages will learn how to make their jack-o-lanterns extra special this year. Starting with a short talk on the history and origin of pumpkin carving, George will show examples and demonstrate modern carving techniques before participants put into practice what they’ve learned on their own pumpkin. Bring: pumpkin, metal soup spoon, pumpkin knife (available where Halloween supplies are sold) and, for adults only, an exacto knife. Children 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult.”

Pumpkin Carver George Adams, is a graduate of Long Island University, where he received a BA in Art. George started carving pumpkins as a child and has been doing it every year since. He gained the opportunity to teach a class on pumpkin carving for the Town of Southampton some years ago. From there he also was able to teach a class at the Hall Of Science in NYC as well as demonstrate carving at a private party at FAO Schwartz in NYC. George would be honored to share his passion for carving pumpkins with you.

Enchanted Trails: Fairy Houses and Gnome Homes for KIDS OF ALL AGES

The North Fork Audubon Society will present “Enchanted Trails: Fairy Houses and Gnome Homes for KIDS OF ALL AGES,” a fundraising and membership event, on Saturday, October 10th and Sunday, October 11th, 11:00am – 4:00pm  at the Red House at Inlet Pond County Park, 65275 Route 48, Greenport.

“Please join us for a very special fundraiser at Inlet Pond County Park to walk the trails and discover Fairy Houses and Gnome Homes in the woods. After you return from your walk, we will provide you with the materials to make your own! Inspired by Tracy Kane’s amazing books, The Fairy House Series, Fairy Houses celebrate the magic in nature. $5 donation per participant, $20 for families of 5 or more. A donation of $20 or more entitles the family to a one year membership in the North Fork Audubon Society.

What are the affects of temperature? Why are the properties of water so important to life? Demos include the polarity of water, freezing point depression, dry ice and ice cream lab.

Making Music with Magnets

Lyrical Children Announces New Fall Offerings

Lyrical Children announces new North Fork locations for its Music Together® program starting this Fall. Classes will now be offered in Southold at the North Fork Fun-n-Fitness facility and on the border of Riverhead & Aquebogue at the Living Water Gospel Church.  This is in addition to the classes that are offered through Riverhead Town in Jamesport.  Free demo classes are scheduled during the week of September 14th.

In addition to its Nursery and Pre K Readiness classes for ages 2 thru 5 years, Lyrical Children’s Preschool will be offering some new afternoon classes:

  • An Art Exploration class will be offered on Tuesday afternoons from 1:30 to 2:30 for ages 2 ½ to 4.  This class is designed to expose your child to various sensory experiences while allowing them to explore and discover their own inner artist.
  • A Handwriting without Tears® class will be offered on Thursday afternoons from 1:30 – 3:00 for Pre K children.  This award winning multi-sensory approach will aid your Pre K child by developing their self confidence with regard to letter formation and beginning writing skills.  A fun and engaging curriculum that incorporates music and manipulatives gives your child the proper foundation for entering Kindergarten.
  • Break Time Club – Parents, do you need a BREAK sometimes?  Join the club and arrange for your child to spend some quality, creative time with us while you shop, go to an appointment or whatever you need to do!!  This is available all afternoons between 12:15 – 3:00.

Fall 2009 Brochure of Southold Recreation Department Now Available

The Southold Town Recreation Department’s fall brochure is available to the public starting today.  It will be an insert in The Suffolk Times and will also be available at all local libraries, town hall, and the recreation center. Additionally, it will be posted on its website.

Registration starts on Tuesday, August 18 for residents and on Tuesday, August 25 for non-residents. Registration for all programs and activities is either by mail or in-person.  Early registrations will not be processed until 4:00 p.m. on the first day of registration.  Office hours are from 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.  Certain programs tend to fill up quickly, so if you can come down to the recreation center in person, this would greatly enhance your chances of securing a spot in the program you would like to attend.  Telephone registrations will not be accepted.  Payment (cash, check, Visa or Master Card) is required at time of registration.

Southold Youth Bureau Presents Summer Jam2

On Friday, July 31 from 6:00 – 9:00pm (rain or shine), the Town of Southold Youth Bureau and Youth Advisory Council will present SUMMER JAM2 with musical entertainment, BBQ, free raffle prizes and games.   Free for grades 7-12 with thanks to corporate sponsorship from Bridgehampton National Bank. The event will take place at the Recreation Center and Peconic School Campus.
